You Are Enough
You Are Enough: An except from Self-care for Life in the City by Francesca Blechner
You are enough
You were born enough
You have always been enough
You have unique gifts and qualities to bring to the world.
Don’t spend your whole life trying to fit in, when you were born to stand out.
You are enough, you were born enough, everything you need is inside of you. Your power resides within you, not in your job title, salary, marital status or education. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. When you look at babies and toddlers, they are so joyful,non-judgemental and light up any room. They know they are enough, there is never a question or a doubt about that. They are totally present and in the moment. Do you think that as they gurgle away, they are questioning how worthy they are?
It is only through our experiences, social and religious programming and parental conditioning we may forget the essence of who we truly are - infinite love here to have a human experience. Our life experiences and failures may knock us down, creating stories that we are not enough. I see failure as life experiences, failures can be our biggest gifts. Most highly successful individuals have failed many times prior to their success like Richard Branson, Walt Disney, JK Rowling, Henry Ford and Thomas Edison, to name but a few.
My motto is: ‘There is no failure, only feedback’.
When Thomas Edison, who invented the electric lightbulb was asked how he felt about failing 10,000times, his response was: ‘I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work’.
Do not see your failures as giving up but as breakthroughs, gifts and life lessons that are steps in your journey to take you to your next adventure.
If we can start viewing ‘failures’ as necessary life lessons we may observe less depression, anxiety and even suicide in schoolkids and university students under immense pressure to succeed. It isheart-breaking to know that there were 95 suicides of university students in England and Wales from August 2016 to July 2017.
If we can reframe what it means to be successful and reframe failure, instil confidence, self-worth, self-esteem, creativity and a sense of adventure from a young age, I’m certain we will see a dramatic drop in mental health issues for young men and women. I believe it’s time for the school system to be revised, prioritising these qualities. We are fortunate to be living in a time where it is possible to do anything you want. It is also the age of the entrepreneur, where it is possible to make a living from what you love. There are kids and teenagers who are millionaires creating their businesses online, doing what they are passionate about. The age of the traditional working life where you had to go to university and achieve the to pgrades to get the nine-to-five job with the ‘secure’ salary that you’d work for the rest of your life is crashing down. Big corporations, the financial and banking system have collapsed. More than ever before people are working for themselves.
Always remember, you are enough. Stick it ona post-it note and have it visible where you can see it every day whether onyour bathroom mirror, on the wall by your bed and even on your car visor.
